January 2007

So, if you like different music, see what Jeff Harrington has made for you. Combinations like violin+piano, flute+bassoon+piano or even flute+viola+harp, nervous syncopated rhythms and musical substance somewhere betweenchamber music and jazz build up the ambience. The sound quality is less than you'd expect from a 128 kbit mp3, and the instruments are synth samples rather than real stuff.

In Digitalmusic weblog you can find a list of artists and some mp3:s, too. Many of them make videos, and you should have a reasonably fast connection to run them smoothly.

February 2007

Jamendo has a playlist-oriented player, which is very simple to use. I usually prefer basic download mp3 and listen system even if I have to wait for the download, but the player is a pleasure to use: just click and listen. To download you'll have to use BitTorrent (or just record the stream). They make some use of advertising, but the ads behave themselves and actually you might find some of them useful. Nothing is blinking or jumping at you face. Jamendo boasts with over 2000 albums, several songs each, and some 80000 active members, yeah, this is big and still growing. The music is under Creative Commons licenses. Donations are accepted in case you like it.

Suicide Squeeze Records is an indie record label and on-line music shop, in case you are ready to pay for your music. For hitch-hikers they have some free samples and not just crops and clips but full-length songs with decent sound quality. Despite of the label name, the music I found was quite merry and rock-ish.

Maeve Gilchrist in Myspace gives you four beautiful songs with a harp, an electric bass, percussions and her charming voice (and that Scottish accent, just love it).  Her album is available at CD-Baby, if they have it in stock, but it may happen that I buy one in front of your nose. And there are some more samples here,  especially if you  prefer  the  acoustic bass. --- 26 feb 2007 I have actually ordered Maeve's album from CD Baby. I will tell when I have it. --- On 6 mar 2007 I received my CD in good condition. It took a week and a day to travel.

See a review of Maeve Gilchrist Trio's album Reaching Me.

April 2007

In case you are around Tampere, don't miss this: Irtamus show in Sampola on Sunday 22 April 2007 15:00. Especially for friends of Irish dancing and music. Sampola is the modern school building near the junction of streets: Itsenäisyydenkatu, Kalevan puistotie, Teiskontie, and Sammonkatu.

If you have sturdy guts, you might want to give a try to this: Urban Crow in Youtube.

I just read a warning about a website FastMP3search (no full url given here). They promise mp3:s to you, they try to seduce you to download and install a plugins, which actually contains dangerous malware. Please note: you don't need any plugins to play mp3:s. If they insist, they are talking bullshit. Read more in Stopbadware.

So, in case you missed Fáinne Óir Anns, the Irtamus show in Sampola, some notions. Few seats were empty: a helthy amount of audience was present. There were an orchestra of five and so many dancers, you can not put any more on that stage without cramming. Green dancers, purple dancers, black dancers and a group seemingly from the other side of the Big Water. Virpi Miljar was wearing dragon-red velvet and her duet tap-dance with Asko Saarinen was awesome, cunning and witty. A little later in her solo Virpi was like a leaping spirit of fire. Towards the end the great many tap-dancers got more punch and finally everybody went into a big ring for the finale.

July 2007

Another music sharing website is Kahvi. (Kahvi is coffee in Finnish, but I have not yet found out, what is the Finnish connection here - or the coffee connection either.)

Most of the time I have not found Finnish music especially fascinating. However, now I think I have got something: Uzva plays interesting instrumental music and you can download samples and all of Afrodite. Uzva means nothing, but reminds the word 'usva', which is light fog.

I read searching music is dangerous and even far more dangerous than searching porn. So, this seems to be extreme sports. The worst keywords are bearshare, limewire, kazaa and winmx. Try something else, instead. Keep your computer armoured. Update your software regularly, the operating system, the antivirus and antimalware programs, the browser and the music player (Winamp or whatever you use). Make sure, ActiveX is not enabled for all the internet, perhaps don't use IE for music browser at all (Perhaps, don't use an operating system with W in the beginning at all). And use a restricted account to search music rather than the administrator's. Search for your favorite artist in Myspace, then follow the fiend chains for whatever seems interesting, rather than hitting "kazaa" into Google.

August 2007

Check Black Audio's website, get their free S. It's said rock, but there is strong groove influence. At times, it is even meditative. Their vocals are lacking certain transparency, hopefully they can afford a better microphone some day.

October 2007

Listen to the samples from Tim Fatchen's website. Some peaceful and serene samples. His Music Download address is even better place to enjoy. His music is solo piano, piano with synths, piano with something. This makes the color range a bit narrow, however, there are other assets in it. Blues for Laurel is ragtime style and I guess, a little tounge-in-cheek. April Monday hovers in bright and light atmosphere. Le Moulin Du Bruel, Ginals has a marvellous, sweet melody. The sound quality is a little fuzzy, but I know good gadgets are expensive.

December 2007

Three songs by Liisa Tuhkanen. Too popish to my taste, but you might like it. Try.

Essentia has some mp3:s to download for you. Their music is actually horrendous. Anyway, it's well done horrendous, if you like metal. Follow the link "lataa ->" (=download), be careful with the link "tilaa" (=order).

So, the highlight of the year 2007 as music website is Jamendo. The best music is Maeve Gilchrist Trio: I actually paid money to get the album, it must be good. It is good.
