This is a review of
Maggie Reilly's
album
Save it for a Rainy Day.

The sound of Maggie's peach and
blood orange colored album Save It For A Rainy Day
is acoustical,
refreshing and atmospheric. Guitar, bass, piano, a bit of drums. Synths
have been used with finesse, you don't notice their presence if you
don't search for them. The bass is warm and sturdy, however, by no
means overwhelming. The mood is tender and meditative but not too sad.
Maggie's voice has grown a bit darker, anyway, it is still light,
nimble, flexible and accurate by pitch. It's no less beautiful, just
warmer. The songs are old covers.
If You Leave Me Now
builds ambience with
bass, guitars and Maggie's
voice. The sound is airy and transparent. This cover is just perfect
and overrides the original as well as any other version of this song.
The title song Save
It For A Rainy Day is
the catchy running song on
this album. How does it feel to waver with a lady-killer around you.
For One Kiss is another song with good
momentum and lots of guitars.
Birds start
with piano sounds,
unfortunately, the song keeps stomping
on its feet. These birds never fly. True Colors
is another song to
stomp on one place, however, Maggies "rainbow" is very beautiful.
Maggie starts Close
Your Eyes a cappella,
soon an acousical guitar
joins. The song has little momentum, however, it works by other means.
The mood is dense and delicate all the time.
Do You Really Want
To Leave Me This Way
starts the album with soft,
warm, and smooth sounds and the longest title in a while. The bass is
sturdy and some guitars follow, when the song walks forward. All the
attack has been removed from the gently yelling solo gutar sound,
creating a quite exciting sensation.
These Dreams
walks with light beat and
bubbling, warbling, and airy
background. Maggie's vocals draw arcs around.
Angel of the Morning
ends the album with a
stunningly perfect
interpretation. Two guitar sounds, a bass, and some very frugal
percussions support. You can not do it any better.
This review was rewritten during the autumn of
2005. The album was released in 2003. I heard Rainy Day on Mayday 2003,
the next day I went to a shop and bought it. Guess what: it was raining
all day long on Mayday. I soon wrote the first version of the review,
which caused Squirrel to contact me. This finally is a rewritten and
far more complete version of the review.
