City of Porvoo

The meeting will take place in a small town called Porvoo (Borgå in Swedish). Porvoo is Finland's second oldest town. People come from all over the world to see the Porvoo Old Town. The town of Porvoo has about 48 000 inhabitants. It´s a bilingual town with about 33% of the inhabitants speaking Swedish as their mother tongue. Porvoo is just an hour’s drive from the capital of Finland Helsinki along the E18 highway. Many bus services operate every hour between Helsinki and Porvoo.

A long time ago the Porvoo Castle was built on the hill and the town was named Borgå ("castle river") in Swedish. The Porvoo parish and the church originated in the 13th century. Six towns were established in Finland during the Middle Ages. Some of them grew to be towns without any official order having been issued. This was the case with Porvoo, which got the town rights after Turku (Åbo) in the 14th century. The story tells that in 1346 Maunu Eerikinpoika (Magnus Eriksson), then the King of Sweden, visited Porvoo and granted the town rights there and then.

Welcome to Porvoo.

Operating in Finland

We try to organize a possibility to operate from the hotel. The callsign is OH2YLS. You won´t need a licence in Finland because you can operate as a ”second operator”. It means that you can operate when there is the station´s owner who is watching what you are doing.

If you have the CEPT licence, you can also take your own radio with you (a handheld radio for example) and use a callsign, which is OH/your own callsign, OH/G0AAAA for example.
