June 1999: able to fly again!

Dave Radomski

Dave Radomski, born in 1941, retired from the US Air Force after 23 years of service. He is supporting John Mulvey's business at at Astre Air International www.astreair.com  on a daily basis.

In the early '90s Dave took keen interest in professional level videography and he invested in a pro-level video system.

Luckily for us, aviation was his lifelong love and so we can enjoy these images of the rebirth of the XR980.

Dave also runs a part-time photo/video business  JDR ENTERPRISES

In 2004 Dave and John made a video in Nevada of restoring the 'Red Gnat' N7CV. The plane will be handed over to its owner in late 2005.

The tandem seated Folland Gnat T.1 trainer jet plane XR980 was restored in dazzling Italian colors in 1999 for her italian owner in New York.

The former XR980 is now NX936FC. It was delivered to its owner Frank Chiodo in New York end of October 1999.

The rebuild took place in Watkins, Colorado in USA. Just east of Denver. The XR980 was rebuilt by John Mulvey who is a professional rebuilder, and Dave was there with his camera.

The first flight of the rebuilt but still unpainted aircraft took place on June 3, 1999. And in September the Gnat already flew in the Italian colors.

The instrument panel is quite different from the one in the Finnish Air Force fighter version.
