Key to European Strongylophthalmyia (Strongylophthalmyiidae)

Synopsis

Smallish very slender flies with a more of less developed spot near wing tip. Body black, legs yellow to black and yellow. Found on or near dead wood in forests. Two species in Europe.

Strongylophthalmyia pictipes Frey, 1935

A rather rare species found on dead aspen (Populus tremula). Males patrol on the trunks of recently fallen trees. Distribution in Europe: See Fauna Europaea.

Flight time in Finland: Summer (my records are from mid June to mid July).



Strongylophthalmyia ustulata (Zetterstedt, 1847)

Found in humid deciduous forests with rich soil, especially near streams. On leaves of Prunus padus etc. Distribution in Europe: See Fauna Europaea.
