Things Conan

should know

about Finland

December 2007 updated v.6e

Finns

We Finns are genetically same origin as Hollanders, Danish and Britts. But our "mythical" original, ancient religion, concepts and language is same origin as Maya and Tibetian shamanistic religion. We have same kind of shame culture as Japanese have.

One specific motivational aspect drives even adolescent Finns.

It´s shame. Shame to be looser or less succesful. Shame to be different.

Shame to express yourself without some kind of mutually accepted comparability. Everything must be ranked very strictly in Finland. You are really loved only when you have over-exceeded your parents hopes. Shame is same time very accepted self-disciplinary act as "determined attitude" and same time self-loathing shame as different individual under social pressure.

Succes is accepted kind of sublimation for the refusal to express feelings. You are weak Finn when you show your feelings.

We are same kind of shame culture as Japan. "World Helth Organization" has ranked Finland most violent country in Europe. Same time we are one of the less corrupted. There are huge paradoxes in Finland. Even suicide is kind of competition. It is final Finnish pride to hang himself in the way that your legs touches floor and man could stop the strangling anytime but accomplishing the suicide this way shows how purposeful and hard man you are. There is no other country having self hanging as most used suicide practice.

"Defiance", "uho", is counter reaction for shame, "häpeä". Behind the shame and succes we have horrible national history of wide hunger deaths before Finland became independent country.

Self-control

- "Self-control is very important in Finland," said Dr. Liisa
Keltikangas-Jarvinen, a professor of psychology at the University of
Helsinki. "You cannot show anger; it means you can't cope. If a person
is very temperamental and alive, expresses emotions like anger and
happiness, the person is seen as infantile."

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/11/international/europe/11HELS.html?ex=1137214800&en=fecc540e16d29e6a&ei=5070

Bigger taboo than sex

In 2004, a theater director named Turo Herala made big news in Helsinki when he began offering anger-venting classes—a true novelty. "Anger in Finland is a bigger taboo than sex," Herala explained to a reporter.

How do you know if the Finn on the elevator with you is outgoing? When he's looking at your shoes instead of at his own. Some researchers view the trademark Finnish reticence as more pathological, linking it to depression and emotional repression and citing Finns' high rates of suicide, alcoholism, and high blood pressure. The key to the Finnish character is quietude. Finns rarely enter into conversation with strangers; words are chosen carefully; small talk is considered suspect. Instead Finns revere "sacred silence" and hold that keeping quiet is healthy and promotes thoughtfulness.

http://psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20070116-000004.html

Same time...

- "Anger is a serious problem in Finland, since they have the
highest rate of domestic violence in Europe. 40% of Finnish women have
been victim of domestic violence"

Tuomas Nevanlinna - Thinking and being

Between Nokia and the pismire

It is said that Finland is the world's leading information society. If so, the reason may be as follows: Finland is the world's most European country. For it is located on the periphery, and Europe is nothing but periphery: it is the lack of central power that characterises Europe. Finland's culture is young and thin, just as the culture of Europe is, in spite of everything, compared to the ancient cultures. Finland is a country whose own identity is the object of constant pondering and sometimes even desperate searching – just as Europe is a continent characterised by the question, 'What is Europe?' (Unlike Asia, which is not characterised by the question, 'What is Asia?')

World-Class Nightspots Attract Young Tourists to Helsinki --ABC news 2008

"Cuba! is the most decadent new club on the scene. This cavernous space is grungy and the Latin house music is groovy, but the gimmicks are what spur the rebels. There's a cocktail menu highlighted by $11 "Guantanamojitos," with names such as "Bloody Communist," "Missile Crisis" and "Sparkling Revolution." For $2,175, a group of up to 10 can rent its own "Personal Jesus," who dons a robe and a long-haired wig and keeps serving those cocktails all night. Folks in need of further stress relief also can pay to destroy things: $725 for a chair, $1,450 for a table, and $725,000 for the entire interior. "

  • Finland has now saddly the most hardest copyright laws - this country is heaven for byrocrats, many laws are done by tsar´s

Some bits of Finland

David Lynch
is 1/4 Finn - his grandfather was a Finn and very strange inward person. Grandfather told odd stories to David and rest you know. David has also said that he too wants to come Finland

- Conan, call David with your show to talk about his ancestors´ land and stories his mad grandfather has told

Finland is a Scandinavian country - we share same kind of lutheran religion and "work ethics" in Nordic countries

Innovation - in Lappland University, there is laboratory for adult playgroung therapy...

Aki Kaurismäki, director/producer
is the most famous independent director from Finland. Melancholy characters who says about four words in a minute in his films. By the way, Jim Jarmusch´s satiric new film Broken flowers is very likely kaurismäki-stylish film. Jim is friend of Kaurismäki. http://film.guardian.co.uk/Guardian_NFT/interview/0,4479,110604,00.html#h

Our present president, Mrs. Tarja Halonen 2008
- is for a good cause woman as leader: one reason to this is that our ancestors lived in matriarcat ( female dominated society ) over 1000 years ago - women were leaders. There is also historical notes that Finns´ ancient "self defence warriors" were both men and women - this is the only country that Vikings were not able to conquer.

with Christopher Nightingale. www.lotr.com. The London premiere of "THE LORD OF THE RINGS" is now scheduled for Autumn 2006."

"THE LORD OF THE RINGS"-books
By the way, did you know that "THE LORD OF THE RINGS" by Tolkien books/movie
are based on the Finnish epic tale KALEVALA?

http://www.6d.fi/starters/kalevalainspired_Tolkien/view?searchterm=tolkien

KALEVALA
- epic tale is about crazy, mythical, suicidal, self-destructive ancient Finns.

You, Conan, will get some good comic characters out of it if you are interested to it. Our ancient religion was totally feminine. Women were leaders and all Finns prayed for all feminine deities and goddesses. Our ancestors lived in matriarcat ( female dominated society ) over 1000 years ago - women were leaders. There is also historical notes that Finns´ ancient "self defence warriors" were both men and women - this is the only country that Vikings were not able to conquer.

  • Ancient Saga, Finnish Kalevala :
    " ...Davis, a National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence;
A collection of these runes, comparable to India's Ramayana, or the
Greek Odyssey, is known in Finland as the Kalevala, and those who sing
its lyrical verses from memory are known as rune singers. These elders
long carried in their minds the entire record of the Finnish language."

Mika Waltari
Writer who wrote "Egyptian" (Sinuhe), which has been praised to be most accurate historical novel written about ancient history. Waltari guessed spookly Egyptian things and habits, that have been verified by archaeologists - after the book. This will be some day to be a base text for big box office film, I assume.

Nokia
is from Finland, not from Japan.

GSM-phone
was invented and created by Finnish engineers , Finnish researchers, designers and
communication experts.

Also...

  • Everyday CD-players´ hassle free audio signal encryption method is also designed by Finns.
  • Also first general web-browser was invented by Finnish engineering students
  • NASA´s Shuttles are flying on help with Finnish students invention: each Shuttle´s computers are using system called LINUX, which first version was developed in Helsinki University by modest student named Linus Torvalds. He is leading still development of free LINUX-system. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3532706.stm

Finns in War
Finns were Sweden´s slaves and it´s army in years 1400-1550 and we were very brutal and furious soldiers and that´s why Sweden was superpower and got rich country - robbing Europe by slave Finn-soldiers. But Sweden left us alone with war with Soviet Union. Thats bitter thing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_War

  • Our wars with Soviet Union (1939 - 44) were a ultimately maddest fight in the war history of Europe
    • where there Russians had man overpower 11 to 1 ( 11 Russian soldiers for 1 Finn soldier )
    • and we won miraculously - they did not invade Finland
    • a quite good, humanistic film/DVD: Tuntematon sotilas / Unknown Soldier (1955) - iMDb info :
  • Sadly Germany´s political friends in Finland were to help Hitler to start WW II as early as it possible. Without Finnish advanced submarine knowledge from year 1931 to 1937 Germans weren´t able to make any submarines, so engineering help from Finland made war begin about 3 years earlier than without Finnish submarine engineering. But remember this: because mad Hitler started war as early as possible with his supreme submarines, his final destruction was much more obvious. So, without Finnish submarine engineering Hitler would be won war later with more reserved army. You never know...

Stories - most common spooky fairytel in Finland has been

  • stories about bloodthirsty fetuses, who stalks adult people and wants to have revenge for their abortion.
  • Finnish Lullabys have most of in the world imagenary of death. Death has seen culturally as releaf to Finnish poor children sometimes ago
  • Voluntary death has been honourable last act for sick, older human being and confused heros in Kalevala epos
  • Healing has been performed by singing. Healers and shamans moved information and secret powers through singing healing songs and poems

Sauna
Best served at 95 degree Celsius hot for natural nude people - and in the dark ( - remember, 100 degree Celsius is boiling point of the water ).

  • Swedes have been stolen sauna's marketing - their lame Swedish hot rooms are nothing like original hot saunas.

Tar ( "Terva" )
Finnish culture has been originally based on tar.
You can use it as glue, food, scent in sauna, as medical liquid adhesive coat on the wound, as sealing, as chewing gum - and so on.

"Sisu" - a brave persistence,
strict, almost neurotic work ethics
is one important abstract quality of Finns. "Less words, more credibility". Dialogue is not important, the work already started is "sacred" to finish at any cost. Rigid but humble, sacrificingly fulfillable work ethic - not same as non-rational materialistic and ritualistic Calvinism (Calvinists were driven off from Eiurope to U.S.A., by the way) . Suitable swearword for to express sisu is "perkele!"
