| The early days | Columba Livia and Columba Liva are sailed by a team of two, Arja-Leena and Heikki Saastamoinen, a happily married couple in their early fourties. They started sailing just few years ago. On the summer of 2005, Heikki bought a Walker Bay dinghy. Arja-Leena joined him on the next spring. Sailing hit them seriously. The 10ft dinghy was sailed on various lakes of Central Finland for winds way higher it was designed to and distances it hardly was inteded for. |
| Purchase of Columba Liva | It was time to find a bigger boat. A boat that would perform well under sail, be trailerable, but still as large as possible was looked for. That resulted to purchase of a Santer 760 cruiser/racer directly from its manufacturer on August 2006. Columba Liva was sailed seriously on Lake Päijänne and on Baltic Sea. |
| A vessel for large waters | Even though the team was very pleased with their boat, a need for even larger vessel became apparent.
The team has five children sailing with them - a number
hard to accommodate on a trailerable boat. The team also pursued towards larger waters which called for
boat with more displacement.
Throughout the fall of 2007 and winter 2008, the team actively searched for the next vessel. Criteria for the boat were clear: heavy displacement for stability, koster type hull with fairly long keel to cope with large waves, ketch rig to divide the sail area to pieces manageable by a team of two, bring versatility to sail plan, and to keep the sail plan closer to hull to resist excessive heeling. Steel, alloy, or extremely heavy GRP construction were favored as the hull material. With these criteria in mind, the search focused on Colin Archers. Even though they are fine vessels, new constructions were judged to be too pricy and used ones could not be found in Finland making prospecting visits very time consuming and expensive. The search was opened up to other types of vessels on the spring of 2008. |
| Purchase of Columba Livia | As soon as a Stormwind 40 steel ketch named "s/y Tarina"
was noticed, it was considered as a serious candidate. The boat was only a good ten years of age and had
well proven its seaworthiness on the seas of the world including ARC 2006 and force 10 stroms with wind speed
up to 33m/s. The boat was purchased in May of 2008.
The team now sails both vessels. Columba Liva is used for racing aiming rather to sail better than to collect trophies. Columba Livia is used for longer distance cruising on open seas. Due to the team being full time involvedin working life, the cruises are currently limited on Baltic Sea. For the same reason, Columba Liva is now for sale. Even though having a boat dedicated for racing is a wonderful idea, there simply is not enough time to sail with two vessels and maintain them both. |
| Awards | Sailor of the year. On 2007, the team was the only one that participated to each and every race organized by their yacht club
and was recognized by the Sailor of the Year award.
Cruiser of the year. On 2008, the team builded up more mileages than any other vessel on its yacht club and was recogniced by the Cruiser of the Year award. |
| The name | The name of the boat vessels is a Latin word of Rock Pigeon. As an unfortunate mistake, the Columba Liva missed "i" on its name. That very obvious error was noticed only when the next vessel was about to be named "Columba Liva II". A fried of the team had once been very interested in birds, and just noted that the name of the vessel wasinterestingly quite similiar to the Latin name for the Pigeon. The mistake was revealed, however, as the boat was already widely known as Columba Liva, its name remained unchanged and the new vessel was simply named Columba Livia, the correct term for the Rock Pigeon used in the Holy Bible as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. |
